“Eerie” had its world premiere last December at the Singapore International Film Festival, and is set to open nationwide in March. Santos-Concio plays the school’s directress, the Mother Superior. This ‘90s-set horror-mystery is about a clairvoyant guidance counselor (Alonzo) who investigates a murder in a Catholic school - the only witness being a ghost. “Birdshot” director Mikhail Red’s “Eerie” made headlines last year for being Bea Alonzo’s first scary movie as well as another vehicle for Charo Santos-Concio. Starring Alfred Vargas, Cherie Gil, and Angel Aquino, it is currently in post-production and is described by Vargas to be about “the desaparecidos, the power of film, and the love for family” as well as having a “film within a film.” The film is directed by “Die Beautiful” producer Perci Intalan and co-stars Kiko Matos, with a special appearance from Ballesteros.īased on Mac Alejandre’s 1980s short film of the same name, “Kaputol” is the director’s first independent feature, its screenplay written by Ricky Lee with cinematography by Lav Diaz. She now has to find her purpose and continue to live her truth, and maybe even fall in love in the process. 23, Martin del Rosario takes over as Barbs, the best friend of Paolo Ballesteros’ Trisha. This sequel to “Die Beautiful,” which revolved around the life and death of a trans woman and beauty queen, was first announced as a T.V. Screenshot from THE IDEAFIRST COMPANY/YOUTUBE Helmed by “Sid & Aya” director Irene Villamor, the movie is said to be about self-love and self-acceptance, and gets its title from the belief that even when it’s particularly sunny, if a pair of tikbalangs are getting married, the skies begin to pour down rain in protest. If you’ve seen the image of Carlo Aquino and Nadine Lustre taking shelter from the rain at a shed that’s unmistakably located in UP Diliman, it might interest you to know that it’s from “Ulan,” Lustre’s first film that doesn’t pair her with boyfriend James Reid. From LGBTQ+ representation and pressing social issues, to high-concept sci-fi, to familiar places and history we haven’t quite left behind, to perennial feelings of sawi and kilig (of course), the crop of local movies this year are bound to capture the Filipino experience, allowing us to see parts of ourselves and our lives on the big screen once more. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to laugh, scream, or swoon. They’re also set across different cities and countries - some are even collaborative projects with foreign creators. The rest of 2019 promises dozens of interesting and possibly base-breaking new releases, from sequels and reboots to anticipated love team comebacks and unexpected pairings. This month alone sees a nationwide premiere for a new Filipino movie every week. But moviegoers have proven themselves able to command change: Because they’re showing up and being vocal about their enthusiasm for Filipino films, along with critical acclaim and record-breaking box office success, they were able to pave a way for more independent production houses and therefore more local choices to grace theaters. Manila (CNN Philippines Life) - Not too long ago, the majority of Philippine cinemas favored and more commonly screened Western and international releases, with the occasional or even sporadic movie from local major production companies to mix things up. The depression is called a frog, and the bricks are known as frogged bricks. In this case the co-ordinating metric works because the length of a single brick (215 mm) is equal to the total of the width of a brick (102.5 mm) plus a perpend (10 mm) plus the width of a second brick (102.5 mm). Mortar beds and perpends of a uniform 10 mm.It is also called the nominal size of a brick.īrick size may be slightly different due to shrinkage or distortion due to firing, etc.Īn example of a co-ordinating metric commonly used for bricks in the UK is as follows: Working dimensions is the size of a manufactured brick.Coordination dimensions are the actual physical dimensions of the brick with the mortar required on one header face, one stretcher face and one bed. These structures have survived from the Stone Age to the present day.īrick dimensions are expressed in construction or technical documents in two ways as co-ordinating dimensions and working dimensions. Much older examples of brickwork made with dried (but not fired) bricks may be found in such ancient locations as Jericho in Palestine, Çatal Höyük in Anatolia, and Mehrgarh in Pakistan. The fired-brick faces of the ziggurat of ancient Dur-Kurigalzu in Iraq date from around 1400 BC, and the brick buildings of ancient Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan were built around 2600 BC. īrick is a popular medium for constructing buildings, and examples of brickwork are found through history as far back as the Bronze Age. For example, in the UK a brick is defined as a unit having dimensions less than 337.5 mm × 225 mm × 112.5 mm (13.3 in × 8.9 in × 4.4 in) and a block is defined as a unit having one or more dimensions greater than the largest possible brick. Typically, rows of bricks called courses are laid on top of one another to build up a structure such as a brick wall.īricks may be differentiated from blocks by size. Insatiable has stirred up a lot of controversies (and has been out since August) but was renewed for a second season, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the popularity of Haunting of Hill House earns it some points in the pro column for a renewal. Haunting of Hill House Season 1 was seventh on the list, ahead of Insatiable and Orange Is the New Black Season 6. Netflix released a “The Shows We Fell in Binge with This Year” list, which is its series between January 1 and November 28, 2018, with the highest average watch time per viewing session. Nothing is more terrifying than being betrayed by your own senses and psyche. This is definitely good news, but it’s not exactly a surprise. In the story, the house toys with the minds of our heroes just like the cat with the mouse: with a fascinated, joyful cruelty. "All the most terrible spectres are already there inside your head, just waiting for the cellar door of the subconscious to spring open so they can get out, sink their icy claws into you. " Houses aren't haunted - people are," horror author (and Stephen King's son) Joe Hill told The Guardian in a recent article about Jackson and her influence on the genre. Ultimately, Hill House's greatest inspiration may have been the most haunted of all places: the human mind. According to Ruth Franklin's 2016 biography of the author, Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life, the Crain mansion in Jackson's book was inspired by several real-life buildings - among them the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, which was itself the subject of horror movie Winchester earlier this year. In fact, the novel itself appears to have had many inspirations both historical and personal. That being said, just because Hill House is based on a book rather than on real-life events doesn't mean it doesn't carry any authenticity. "Yet," writer Katie Rife continues, this new version "still feels in the spirit of the book," so Jackson acolytes shouldn't be too upset. Even so, it actually borrows the least from the source material, "taking a contemporary, character-based approach that carries little over from Shirley Jackson's original novel," according to the A.V. While both of those adaptations were given the short and simple title The Haunting, this new reimagining of Jackson's tale gives the story its full and proper name. Hill House has been adapted for the screen twice before, both times in the form of feature films: first in 1963, as directed by Robert Wise ( The Sound Of Music) and again in 1999, in a version starring Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Lili Taylor. Rather, The Haunting Of Hill House is based on the classic 1959 novel of the same name by horror author Shirley Jackson. So is The Haunting Of Hill House like those stories? Or is it an original creation?Īs it turns out, the Netflix series does have very famous source material. Of course, whether you think any of that qualifies as a "true" story is up to you - but these are stories that at least find their foundations in things that happened to real, tangible people. More recently, both The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 took inspiration from the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren - the same couple who investigated the haunting in Amityville. Perhaps the most famous of those is the 1979 classic The Amityville Horror, supposedly based on events that happened to the Lutz family in their upstate New York home. There is a long tradition of haunted house movies being at least loosely inspired by "real" hauntings. The disbelievers among us will scoff at the very idea that the spooky ghost story could be inspired by actual events others may be dying to know which real-life haunted house it's based on so they can visit and experience some paranormal activity themselves. Do you believe in ghosts? The answer to that question will likely inform your opinion on whether or not Netflix's new horror series The Haunting Of Hill House is based on a true story. Read Caroline’s review of the previous episode, I’d Leave My Happy Home For You, here. This week will be hard, but it will be cathartic and, for Elena fans, it’s going to be the end of an era. Both of those things are good when done to an extent that doesn’t ruin the viewing experience and, as with past seasons, I’m glad the traumatic action-packed instalment has come a week before the actual finale. Knowing what’s to come has done two things – get everyone excited and invested in the last few episodes and forced us all to second-guess absolutely everything the show is doing with Elena. That said, neither character can do any wrong in my eyes, and at least their reasons for not being together right now are based in character and story, rather than contrived magical objects and memory wipes. With Delena on their way out, I guess we have to have an annoying on-off couple. Then there’s disappointment and exasperation as soon as her and Stefan sit down for a chat. A majority of the episode titles for this season are named after songs released in 1994 & 1903. (season 6) The Vampire Diaries, an American supernatural drama, was renewed for a sixth season by The CW on February 13, 2014, and it premiered on October 2, 2014. On the dreaded post-switch amends tour at the same time as making sure everything is just-so for the upcoming murder-wedding, the first feeling the whole thing brought up was joy and relief at having her back. The Vampire Diaries (season 6) The Vampire Diaries. The fun of the episode came from an unlikely source – a return of event-planner extraordinaire Caroline Forbes. Bonnie takes matters into her own hands after finding herself on the receiving end of a. No, this was ‘Matt the plot device’, helping Bonnie take care of Lily before Kai burst into the ceremony, so his issues have been shelved until such time the show decides to bring them up again. Maybe they’re perfect together but, unless she somehow leaves town with him this week, I guess we’ll never know (I hope she doesn’t leave town with him this week). He’s also terrible towards Liv again, and thank God she’s more adept at giving some of it back. For a moment I thought we might double-up on bows tied for soon-to-be-over-relationships, but his somewhat sweet interaction with Caroline turned into him being defensive and horrible – much like when they were together. Its consequences will be monumental, and so far the lead-up has been handled really nicely.īut we can’t forget Tyler, and this episode saw him do his usual “monosyllabic goon” tour of douchebaggery to every ex-girlfriend he’s had over six years. As inconsequential as Elena has been for the last couple of seasons, removing her is undoubtedly the end of a massive chapter in the show’s history. But it’s a lovely gesture for Delena shippers, with the scene in which Damon reveals his intentions as close to a wedding as these two are ever going to get. |
